The Brisbane Broncos and National Rugby League star halfback Peter Wallace's season is over after x-rays confirmed his left ankle is broken.
A devastated Wallace told AAP on Sunday he was not sure what the Broncos would do to replace him for next Saturday night's preliminary final clash with Melbourne, with the winner advancing to the grand final.
Brisbane's options appear to be moving captain Darren Lockyer to halfback or calling up under-20s halfback Ben Hunt.
Wallace had been in outstanding form and his kicking game in the past few weeks had been the best in his career.
His defence in the ruck and steady hand had been a key factor in taking the pressure off Lockyer.
