Renault handed suspended ban over "crashgate"

The Renault Formula One team has been given a suspended ban for ordering Nelson Piquet junior to crash during last year's Singapore Grand Prix.

The International Automobile Federation have told the French team the threat of a permanent ban from the sport will hang over them until the end of the 2011 season, but it will be activated during that time only if they are found guilty of a similar charge.

Renault escaped a permanent exclusion from formula one after owning up to the conspiracy and with the departure from the team of Piquet, team boss Flavio Briatore and chief engineer Pat Symonds.

Briatore was handed an "unlimited" ban from the sport while Symonds was suspended for five years.

Last week Renault sensationally announced they would not be contesting charges against Briatore and Symonds and announced their departures from the team.
