The disgraced former Renault team boss Flavio Briatore is devastated by his life ban from Formula One for fixing the result of last year's Singapore Grand Prix, and he may take legal action against motor sport's governing body.

A day after Briatore's punishment was handed down by the International Automobile Federation, Italy's leading sports newspaper is reporting the 59 year old is concerned about the damage to his reputation, and he's considering seeking compensation throught the courts.

Briatore has one sympathiser on the FIA's world motorsport council. The head of the Spanish motorsport federation Carlos Garcia believes Briatore's penalty is excessive, there was no clear proof against him, and he wasn't able to defend himself.
