NZ cyclists off the pace in World Championship time trial

New Zealand's Olympic track cyclists Wesley Gough and Jesse Sergent have finished out of the major placings in the time trial at the UCI World Road Championships in Switzerland.

Gough and Sergent placed 23rd and 34th respectively in the men's under-23 time trial over 33.2km - two laps of the circuit at Menrisio.

Australian Jack Bobridge won the gold medal.

US-based Jeremy Vennell, the national time trial champion, competes in the elite men's race tonight.

Olympic champion Kristin Armstrong of the United States stormed to victory in the women's time trial, beating her nearest competitor by almost a minute.
