Gill second in qualfying tournament in Germany

The New Zealand rookie professional James Gill fired a six under par 66 to be outright second after two rounds of the European PGA Tour's first qualifying stage in Germany.

The Hamilton 24-year-old had an eagle, six birdies and two bogeys to be one shot behind former Junior Ryder Cup player and European Amateur Champion Marius Thorp of Norway.

Four courses across Europe - in England, France, Germany and Italy - are hosting the first qualifying stage where hundreds of hopefuls are hoping to progress towards membership of the European Tour.

The top 26th players (plus ties) from Germany qualify for the second of three stages in Spain in November.
