Spurs manager calls for racist fans to be locked up

2:31 pm on 26 September 2009

The manager of the English Premier league football side, Tottenham, Harry Redknapp, says racist supporters should be jailed because stadium bans are not a strong enough deterrent.

Redknapp says he has been shocked by recent cases such as black West Ham striker Carlton Cole's claim that Millwall fans aimed monkey chants at him.

He says anyone who does that belongs in prison or a mental institution.

The Spurs manager, and former West Ham player, says all the football leagues have so many fantastic black players that without them, there wouldn't be teams.

Redknapp also feels strongly about chants aimed at the family or personal life of players, and says such people should not be allowed to attend matches.
