Tasman has held on to win a tight encounter 12-8 over Auckland, in their Air New Zealand Cup rugby match in Nelson on Sunday.

In a free-flowing game, a try from captain Andrew Goodman gave the home side a 7-3 half-time lead.

A Blair Cook try put the Makos further ahead early in the second spell before Auckland grabbed a late try.

The home side held on, however, to record their first ever win over Auckland.

The win moves the Makos above Wellington into fifth spot on the table, with 24 points, with Auckland two points adrift in seventh.
