The New Zealand cricket captain Dan Vettori has praised top order batsman Martin Guptil for holding the side's inning and Champions Trophy tournament hopes together, in their 38 run win over Sri Lanka in Johannesburg.

The Black Caps got off to a flyer with Jesse Ryder who top scored with 74 and Brendon McCulllum who made 46 putting on 125 for the first wicket in less than 20 overs.

However the Black Caps looked to have wasted the start in losing their next four wickets for just 36 runs, until Guptil who made 66 and Dan Vettori got things back on course with a 59 run partnership, scoring at a run a ball.

Meanwhile Jesse Ryder's been replaced in the NZ squad by Aaron Redmond, with Ryder suffering a groin muscle injury in his innings, which has forced him out of the tournament.

He was also fined 15 percent of his match fee after he hit a chair with his bat as he walked back to the changing rooms after being dismissed.

England became the first team to reach the semi-finals knocking hosts South Africa out of the tournament in beating them by 22 runs.

Batting first England made 323 for eight and South Africa in reply were 301 for nine at the end of their 50 overs, with skipper Graeme Smith making 141
