The controversial world womens tennis number one Dinara Safina has been humbled by a qualifier in the opening round of the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.

Safina, whose ownership of the number one spot has been a source of contention, especially following her failure to win a maiden grand slam this year, lost in three sets to the 18 year old Taiwanese Chang Kai-chen, ranked 131 places below Safina.

Another Russian, the French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, was also eliminated in the first round by a qualifier, Germany's Andrea Petkovic.
