Poverty Bay skipper suspended

Poverty Bay's captain Scott Leighton has been suspended for two weeks following a New Zealand Rugby Union judicial hearing for a dangerous tackle during his side's Heartland Championship match against Wairarapa Bush in Gisborne on Saturday.

The first-five was sent off 28 minutes into the second half of the Meads Cup competition match for a lifting tackle on Wairarapa's halfback Nick Risdon.

He appeared before NZRU Judicial Officer Chris Morris in Auckland last night.

Morris says the player's actions were reckless and insufficient care was taken to avoid the danger inherent in lifting a tackled player.
