Villa scored first when the former City defender and captain Richard Dunne headed in a corner kick but the Birmingham side conceded the equaliser on 67 minutes.
Striker Craig Bellamy scored after a fine pull-back by Emmanuel Adebayor, who was returning from a three-match ban for violent conduct.
City move on to 16 points, level with Tottenham Hotspur but behind the London club on goals scored, while Villa climb to seventh.
Chelsea lead on 21 points, two clear of Manchester United.
