Flintoff and Lineker attacked by Taleban

7:06 am on 7 October 2009

The England cricket star Andrew Flintoff and football legend Gary Lineker had to dive for cover when Taliban insurgents attacked a British military base in Afghanistan.

The sports stars were at Kandahar air base to hand out Pride of Britain awards for the Daily Mirror newspaper when they came under attack.

Flintoff says he initially thought it was a wind up but then saw everyone dive to the floor.

On crutches following knee surgery, the Lancashire all-rounder had to join service personnel in scrambling for cover under the dining room tables.
