Andy Murray's pulled out of next week's Shanghai Masters, saying he will need another several weeks of rest and rehabilitation on his injured wrist.

The Scot's withdrawal comes after world number one Roger Federer also withdrew, the Swiss exhausted after a furious May to September winning streak, and leaves Spain's Rafael Nadal as top seed for Shanghai.

In Beijing Nadal's battled through a tricky second round tie against American James Blake at the China Open to reach the quarter-finals.

The world number two, playing his first tournament since picking up an injury at the US Open, was far from his rampaging best but again proved his fitness by winning 7-5 6-7 6-3 in a 143-minute contest.

In the women's draw, the third round proved a step too far for China's world number 226 Zhang Shuai, who lost in straight sets to France's Marion Bartoli.
