Glory snatch late victory over Adelaide

8:50 am on 10 October 2009

Tando Velaphi's heroics and a neat strike from Victor Sikora enabled the Perth Glory to snatch a pulsating 1-nil victory over Adelaide United in a spiteful A-League football clash in Perth.

Adelaide looked threatening for much of the night but were constantly denied by Velaphi, who pulled off a string of acrobatic saves to keep Perth in the match.

Sikora pounced in the 79th minute, firing the ball past Adelaide custodian Eugene Galekovic from the top of the box to secure maximum points in front of 9,482 adoring fans.

In a game with plenty of niggle, players from both sides could come under scrutiny from Football Federation Australia's match review panel after a round of push-and-shove as they made their way to the sheds at half-time.

While no action was taken by referee Chris Beath, Adelaide defender Scott Jamieson was left holding his head after the two teams were separated.

The Glory were forced to play out the final few minutes of the match with just 10 men after defender Andy Todd was red carded for his second bookable offence.

The win lifts Perth to second on the table, while it also ended the Glory's four-game losing streak against the Reds.
