Italy football captain has dope charges dropped

Italy's football captain Fabio Cannavaro has been cleared of doping after failing a drugs test following treatment for an insect sting.

The Italian Olympic Committee anti doping committee dropped proceedings against the Juventus defender after he received emergency cortisone treatment for a sting in late August and then failed a dope test after a Serie A match two days later.

Cannavaro had requested an exemption for the medication but did not receive it before he was tested because of a mix-up over the documentation.
