Caulfield Cup betting wide open with favourites out

10:33 am on 14 October 2009

Saturday's Caulfield Cup has become a wide open affair following the witdrawals yesterday of two of the favourites.

Last year's Cox Plate winner Maldivian won't be racing again this spring after pulling up sore after a track gallop yesterday morning, and the connections of the European stayer Speed Gifted, which was the early favourite, have decided to bypass Caulfield and focus on the Cox Plate later this month.

The new top weight is last year's Melbourne Cup winner Viewed, and the favourites Predatory Pricer and Vigor are paying seven dollars.

The three New Zealand hopes in the field of 18 are Red Ruler, Harris Tweed and Daffodil.
