Argentina face elimination fro World Cup

12:04 pm on 15 October 2009

Today two-time former champions Argentina face the prospect of failing to qualify for next year's Fifa World Cup finals in South Africa.

Argentina are away to Uruguay and a win or draw will seem them qualify as the fourth team from South America, while a loss will either put them into a play-off or eliminate them altogether, if Ecuador beat Chile.

Argentina have failed to qualify for the finals only once, in 1970, while they didn't enter in 1938, 1950 or 1954.

Brazil, Paraguay and Chile are the teams to have qualified from South America so far.

The fifth-placed South American team faces a play-off with the fourth-placed team from North and Central America for a place in the finals.
