World No.1 Serena Williams is preparing to play in the Sydney International starting in January, although the American is facing a possible ban for her US Open outburst.

However Williams may not be interested in an Australian Open warm-up event if an International Tennis Federation investigation decides to ban the American from the next grand slam tournament, which begins in Melbourne on January 18.

Williams drew a record $15,000 fine after verbally attacking a line judge at the US Open.

he official had called a foot fault at a key point in a semi-final loss against Kim Clijsters.

Television replays of the ugly incident appeared to show Williams threatening the official, which sparked the investigation of the incident and an apology from Williams.

The WTA says the result of the ITF probe is likely to be known before the end of the year.
