Sydney pours cold water on Masters Open Swim

The open water swimming event at the World Masters Games in Sydney has been cancelled due to low water temperature.

Hundreds of competitors from all over the world were expected to swim in the three kilometre event at Mosman's Chowder Bay.

A spokeswoman for the Games says organisers and technical delegates deemed the water temperature of 13 degrees too low for a safe event.

She said the regulations of swimming's governing world body, FINA, state a minimum of 18 degrees for an open water event and swimmers were at risk of hypothermia if they swam.
