Briatore to fight life ban

6:48 am on 19 October 2009

Former Renault chief Flavio Briatore has announced he's taking legal action to challenge his life ban from motorsport for his role in formula one's "crashgate" affair.

The flamboyant Italian stood down as Renault team principal in mid-September, days before motorsport's governing body kicked him out of Formula One for his role in ordering Piquet junior to crash at the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix to help teammate Fernando Alonso win the race.

Briatore has described his ban as "a legal absurdity" and he's starting legal proceedings against the FIA this week in Paris.
