Women's hockey team improves ranking

The New Zealand women's hockey team has climbed into the top ten of the world rankings after their win in the Champions Challenge tournament in South Africa earlier this week.

The Black Sticks have moved up two places from 11th to ninth.

The team, which failed to win a match at last year's Olympics, has this year beaten Australia to qualify for the World Cup, while this week's win in Cape Town has qualified them for next year's top-tier Champions Trophy tournament.

The top eight of the women's world ranking hasn't changed with the Netherlands on top from Argentina and China with Australia fifth.

The New Zealand men's team is ranked eighth.
