Canterbury have beaten Hawke's Bay 20-3 in the first Air New Zealand Cup semi-final in Christchurch.

The defending provincial rugby champions bounced back from their Ranfurly Shield defeat with a three tries to none victory.

Canterbury led 12 - 3 at half-time with tries to locks Sam Whitelock and Isaac Ross.

First-five Stephen Brett scored all the points after the break with a try in the 50th minute and a late penalty.

Canterbury will host the final next week against the winner of tonight's other semi-final, when Shield holders Southland visit Wellington.
