Phoenix beaten in Sydney

6:06 am on 2 November 2009

The Wellington Phoenix were unable to follow up their historic 6-nil victory over Gold Coast last weekend, suffering a 3-1 loss to Sydney in their A-League football clash across the tasman last night.

Man-of-the-match Alex Brosque had a hand in all of his side's goals in a 20-minute first-half blitz... strike partner Mark Bridge scored 2 of them.

The visitors battled in the opening minutes just to stay on the park before being shredded by top of the table Sydney.... Daniel's left shoulder popped out in the first minute and it took two minutes on the sidelines for medical staff to put it back in.

Wellington goalkeeper Mark Paston was then hit by friendly fire in the fifth minute, colliding with teammate Paul Ifill going for the ball, and he was replaced by Reece Crowther two minutes later.

Daniel had a penalty disallowed called back for Phoenix players encroaching on the area... the Brazilians second effort was stopped by the keeper.

Costa Barbarouses scored the Phoenix goal, 9 minutes from time.

Sydeny have 25 points at the top of the table, the Phoenix are 8th with 13 points.
