Another Melbourne Cup hope might be withdrawn

Another fancied Melbourne Cup runner is in doubt for this afternoon's 6.8-million dollars race.

Stewards raised concern about the northern visitor Changingoftheguard when the horse was put through an examination yesterday to see how he was progressing from a hoof absess which he picked up after arriving in Melbourne.

The favourite among the six European entrants will have a further vet's examination later this morning.

Last year's winner Viewed remains the favourite, attempting to become only the 6th horse to win the famous race more than once, and the bush trained South Australian stayer Alcopop is still a clear second favourite.

The New Zealand mare Daffodil came in for strong support yesterday.

Rain was forecast for last night after a sunny spell in Melbourne, and with more showers expected during the day, the Cup could be run on a rain-affected track.
