Melbourne students wag school en masse on Cup eve

9:01 am on 3 November 2009

More than half of Melbourne students wagged school yesterday, angering teachers who said running normal lessons on Melbourne Cup Eve was a waste of time.

The Victorian Education Union said just two pupils showed up at one 600-student secondary school.

Many parents decided not to turn up at work, although adult absentee figures weren't available with many union officials taking the day off as well.

Today is a public holiday.
