Jockeys rate Melbourne Cup one of the roughest

6:57 am on 4 November 2009

Yesterday's Melbourne Cup has been described by some jockeys as one of the roughest in recent times, and the New Zealand favourite Daffodil was one of the worst affected.

The Melbourne jockey Craig Williams, the rider of Leica Ding, was suspended until the 19th of this month for causing interference to Daffodil causing the mare to nearly fall.

Michelle Payne, riding in her first Cup aboard Allez Wonder, said the second favourite Viewed racing ahead of her nearly fell going past the winning post the first time, and Dom Tourneur, rider of the favourite Alcopop said his horse was badly bumped and belted and did well to finish 6th.

But the winner Shocking deserved his victory after having to run three wide into a stiff breeze for most of the race.
