Blackgrove regains lead

6:50 am on 7 November 2009

The United States-based Waimate professional rider Heath Blackgrove will wear the leader's yellow

jersey on the final day of cycling's Tour of Southland.

Blackgrove leads the Olympic track medallist Marc Ryan by 11 secvonds with Bauer now just over a minute back in third.

Blackgrove regained the overall lead thanks to his team's tactics on the 165 kilometre leg from Winton to Te Anau when others, including the previous leader Jack Bauer's, missed the vital early break.

A group of 15 riders broke clear early and most remained intact for more than 150 kilometres before the Taupo teenager Patrick Bevin won the stage in a sprint finish.

There's a 79 kilometre stage from Te Anau to Lumsden this morning and the final leg is 65 killometres from Winton to Invercargill this afternoon.
