Robertson wins in Ireland

In a boost for the New Zealand Commonwealth Games team, the runner Zane Robertson has won the 3,000 metres race at the Cork City Sports meeting in Ireland.

The former Hamilton athlete, who's now based in Ethiopia, recorded the fourth-fastest time for a New Zealand athlete over the distance.

He's now only ranked behind new national record holder Nick Willis (7.36.91), John Walker (7:37.49) and Rod Dixon (7:41.0).

Robertson's time of 7:41.37 was also a new personal best, eclipsing his indoor time of 7:44.16 run at the World Indoor Championships in March.

At the same meeting, Angie Smit placed second in the 800 metres in her fastest time since the national championships in March, running it in 2:01.84, while in Italy, Nikki Hamblin finished second in a 1500 metre race in Lignano.
