Double swimming world champion Paul Biedermann has become the first man to swim the 200 metre freestyle short course event in under 100 seconds.

After setting a new world record of 1:39:37 at a world cup meeting in Berlin, the German says he was disappointed not to face the American great Michael Phelps in the final.

Phelps, who won eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics, has not been wearing the new high-tech bodysuits and posted just the 12th fastest time.

Phelps' best performance at the swim meet has been a second placing in the 200 metre individual medley.

The new high-tech swimsuits have caused controversy since their introduction and will be banned from next year.
