The New Zealand cricket captain Daniel Vettori has been cleared to play in the three-match Test series against Pakistan but pace bowler Kyle Mills is having surgery and is out for the summer.

Vettori suffered delayed mild concussion after being hit in the helmet grille while batting in the One-Day International series against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi and didn't play in the Twenty20 matches as a precautionary measure.

An orthopaedic surgeon has also assessed Vettori's shoulder injury and found that although there's structural damage to the joint it won't affect his ability to bowl.

However Mills is expected to undergo surgery for a torn rotator cuff on his left shoulder and for a chronic injury to his right knee.

His goal is to be fit for the ICC World Twenty20 starting in April.
