West Indies tour gets off on the wrong foot

6:45 pm on 18 November 2009

The West Indies have kicked off their tour of Australia on the wrong foot with skipper Chris Gayle flying home and their top-order failing in their opening match against Queensland in Brisbane.

The Windies lost Gayle shortly before the toss after he rushed home to Jamaica to be with his seriously ill mother, who's been admitted to hospital.

Wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin took the reins and elected to bat first after winning the toss with the tourists 222-6, at tea on the opening day of the three-day tour match.
