Italian cyclist Vincenzo Nibali has won the Tour de France, safely crossing the finish line at the end of the final stage into Paris just over half an hour ago to claim the title for the first time.

Nibali's winning margin was seven minutes and 47 seconds and he becomes one of only three riders to have won a set of the three European Grand Tours.

France celebrated its first double podium finish in 30 years as veteran Jean-Christophe Peraud and youngster Thibaut Pinot took second and third respectively.

New Zealand's Jack Bauer was officially 24th on the final stage, crossing the finishing line with the leading bunch.
