Gallop says Bird return to NRL not automatic

7:19 pm on 25 November 2009

The National Rugby league boss David Gallop says any club wanting to sign Greg Bird will need to demonstrate how they'll manage the controversial player before he can be registered.

Gallop says Bird's successful appeal which overturned a conviction for wounding his girlfried with a broken glass, doesn't mean the former test player, who has a history of off-field misdemeanours, will be automatically re-registered by the league.

Gallop says if a club wants to sign Bird, who's currently playing for the Catalan Dragons in the English Super League, they'd show how they are going to manage him.
