The Italian footballer Mario Balotelli is on the brink of a shock move to Liverpool, two weeks after manager Brendan Rodgers ruled out a bid for the controversial striker.

According to an Italian tv sports channel AC Milan have agreed to release 24-year-old Balotelli and a transfer deal worth 30 million dollars is being finalised.

A return to England and a fresh start could suit Balotelli. The striker has been subjected to criticism in his home country for a perceived poor attitude during Italy's World Cup campaign, which ended with the Azzurri flying home at the end of the group stage.

And the new English Premier League football season bursts into life this weekend with last season's top two, Manchester City and Liverpool, facing off at Eastlands.

One win separated the two sides last season and both kicked off the new season with wins.

City won 2-nil at Newcastle last weekend, while Liverpool won their opener against Southampton 2-1.

Manchester United travel to Sunderland after their shock 2-1 loss at home to Swansea in their first game under new manager Louis van Gaal.
