An extended time away from golf for surgery is likely for New Zealand's world number three Lydia Ko.

Ko's currently taking a week off from the LPGA tour after having a procedure to drain a cyst on her wrist in a bid to be fit for the year's final major.

The 17-year-old Ko has struggled with the cyst on her left wrist for a number of years and has had it drained before, but it's grown larger in recent weeks causing her pain while she plays.

Her agent Michael Yim says she had the procedure in Florida and will take the week off to let it heal before beginning preparations for the Evian Championship in France in two weeks' time.

Yim says it's only a temporary solution and it's likely the cyst will refill, which may force her to look at a more permanent option.

If she has to have surgery on her wrist she's likely to be kept out of golf for at least two months.
