The New Zealand golfer Michael Long's finished in a tie for third place at the Australian Open in Sydney.

It's a career-best at the tournament for the Perth-based Long, who was alone in third on four under with four holes to go before a double bogey and a bogey along with a birdie and a par shot saw him drop to a two under 70 for the day, tied with the American Bryce Molder.

But he says he's happy with the result considering he began the day in ninth place.

The Australian Adam Scott ran away with it by five shots ahead of compatriot Stuart Appleby, nine shots ahead of Long and Molder.

The next highest-placed New Zealander was Tim Wilkinson, tied for 12th, followed by the amateur Ben Campbell back in 40th equal.
