One change to Blackcaps squad for third test against Pakistan

2:27 pm on 7 December 2009

The New Zealand selectors have made just one change to the squad for the third cricket test against Pakistan in Napier, despite the Blackcaps dismal batting effort in the second test in Wellington.

The Northern Districts batsman BJ Watling comes into the squad taking the place of Peter Fulton who once again failed to transfer domestic form onto the international stage.

The 24 year old Watling earns his first call-up to the Blackcaps Test squad after playing in the two Twenty20 Internationals against Pakistan last month in the United Arab Emirates.

His selection comes after strong performances in the last season's State Shield, and innings of 90 and 136 in the most recent rounds of the Plunket Shield.

Watling also toured this year with the New Zealand Emerging Players in Australia, and New Zealand A in India.

National selector Mark Greatbatch says Watling shows outstanding potential as a developing batsman.

He says with the series at one-all the Blackcaps need to regroup and he believes Watling can add strength at the top of the batting order.

Greatbatch conceded there was a lot of discussion about the batting line-up but says this was not the time for wholesale change.

The third Test against Pakistan starts in Napier on Friday December the 11th.

The Blackcaps squad of 13 is:

Daniel Vettori (Captain)

Grant Elliott

Daniel Flynn

Martin Guptill

Chris Martin

Brendon McCullum

Tim McIntosh

Iain O'Brien

Jeetan Patel

Tim Southee

Ross Taylor

Daryl Tuffey

BJ Watling
