Wellington Phoenix accept 3-match suspension

5:39 am on 9 December 2009

The Wellington Phoenix have accepted defender Ben Sigmund's three-game suspension for assaulting an opposing football player in their 1-all home draw with Melbourne Victory on Friday.

Televison replays showed Sigmund punch Melbourne's Adrian Leijer in an off-the-ball incident after a corner had been taken by the visiting side.

The suspension follows two charges from the week before, where Manny Muscat received the same penalty for elbowing an opposing player and the Phoenix were charged with a team misconduct offence.

The Wellington Phoenix CEO Tony Pignata says the team has been one of the best behaved in the A-League, making these incidents particularly unfortunate.

Pignata says the Phoenix will look to put the past two weeks behind them and concentrate on playing at their best for the remainder of the season.
