The American golfer Billy Horschel has continued his dramatic rise up the world golf rankings after his stunning finish to the PGA tour season.

Horschel crowned his season yesterday in Atlanta, Georgia with his second straight victory of the 4-tournament Fedex Cup series, collecting a 10-million US dollar bonus and jumping 9 places to number 14 in the world rankings.

Rory McIroy shared second place with Jim Furyk and the Northern Irishman ends the season on top of the world rankings.

The PGA tour season starts in the second week of next month in California.

Tied for the lead overnight with McIlroy in the PGA Tour's season-ending playoff event, Horschel held his nerve to triumph by three shots, clinching his third career victory on the US circuit and second in two weeks to win nearly $14 million, including the $12 million dollar FedEx Cup bonus.

Helped by a clutch par-saving putt from 30 feet on the 16th hole, Horschel signed off with a two-under-par 68 on a damp day at East Lake Golf Club for an 11-under total of 269.

McIlroy, seeking his fourth PGA Tour win of the year, fell out of contention with a double at the sixth and three consecutive bogeys from the ninth before closing with a 71, tying for second with American Jim Furyk.
