World cycling champion Allison Shanks says she's devastated she won't have the chance to win an Olympic gold medal in the women's individual pursuit.

The International Olympic committee has decided there'll be five cycling events for both men and women, with the 3000-metre individual pursuit among those dropped.

Shanks won the world title in Poland in March after finishing fourth at the Beijing Olympics last year.

However she says she won't be giving up the event as between now and the London Olympics there's another three world champs along with the Commonwealth Games in India.

She says come 2012 she will then focus on the teams pursuit which has been added to the Olympic programme.
