Wanganui unhappy at NZRU's backtracking

While the about-face by the Rugby Union over axing four teams from the Air New Zealand Cup has been welcomed by the provinces facing the chop, others are frustrated at the backdown.

Heartland champions Wanganui were to join the proposed new second division next year and were all set to go, according to CEO Dale Cobb.

Cobb says in a perfect world Wanganui were hoping to be part of the 10-six-10 competition in 2010 and were prepared to put their reputation on the line against the relegated bigger unions and give it a go.

A shortened competition in 2011 due to the Rugby World Cup means it's likely a permanent new provincial competiton format won't be in place until 2012.
