Penney disappointed at basketball seedings

Tall Blacks veteran Kirk Penney's at a loss to understand the seedings for the basketball world champs in Turkey next year, which see New Zealand ranked behind Australia despite beating the Boomers in the qualifying series.

Basketball's governing body, FIBA, has released the seedings in six tiers, but rather than being grouped on qualifying performances or world rankings, they've done so on apparent competitiveness.

The Tall Blacks have been seeded along side China, Asian champions Iran and African champions Angola in pool play which means they'll avoid them in the group stages but won't learn who they'll play until tomorrow night when they draw is made.

Penney says they'd have preferred to play against some of the team in their tier but it means they will play one of the world's top four teams, Olympic champions the United States, Argentina, Spain or Greece.
