Auckland City has finished fifth at the FIFA club World Cup in Abu Dhabi with an upset 3-2 win over 10 man African champions TP Mazembe.

Substitute Riki van Steeden scored in the dying seconds to give the Oceania champions another $US500,000 in addition to the $1 million they'd picked up for reaching the quarter-finals, where they lost to Atlante of Mexico.

Striker Jason Hayne had earlier scored twice for Auckland, who won two of their three matches

They took the lead after 30 minutes when Hayne beat the offside trap to race clear, chest down a high ball as he rounded Mazembe's reserve keeper outside the box and steer it home.

Mazembe's goalkeeper had been sent off five minutes earlier for handball but the Democratic Republic of Congo side turned the score around with better finishing in the second half, scoring two fine goals.

Hayne equalised with 18 minutes to go and van Steeden steered in the winner near the end of stoppage time.
