Phoenix save late draw in Adelaide

11:53 am on 19 December 2009

A-League football strugglers Adelaide United and Wellington Phoenix have played out a one-all draw at Hindmarsh Stadium in a result that did little for either sides' finals chances.

Adelaide's Brazilian fullback Alemao ignited the game with a stunning 30-metre strike in the 57th minute before the Phoenix substitute Adrian Caceres forced an own goal in the 77th minute.

Neither side troubled the goalkeepers before half-time as Wellington rallied late to force their 10th draw of the season in front of 9,070 fans.

The draw barely lifted Adelaide off the bottom of the A-League on goal difference, but kept them at least a win from the top six.

The Phoenix remain in 8th place on the ladder, two points outside a top six playoff spot.

Alemao produced the game's highlight when he collected the ball in midfield, was left unmarked and unleashed his wonder strike into the far corner for his first goal of the season.

Adelaide looked to kill of the Phoenix but failed to do so and Caceres made them pay.

He was on the park for just a minute when he beat two defenders on the left and cut back a cross which deflected off Adelaide goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic into the goal for the equaliser.

Paul Ifill headed straight to Galekovic in the 85th minute before Phoenix captain Tim Brown bounced a header over the cross bar in the 88th minute from a Leo Bertos corner.
