An elbow injury to Ricky Ponting has placed the Australian captain in serious doubt for the Boxing Day Test against Pakistan in Melbourne.

An MRI scan revealed Ponting has tendon damage to his elbow after being struck by a bouncer from West Indies paceman Kemar Roach on day one of the third Test in Perth.

The 35 year old defied orders from the Australian team's physiotherapist and batted in Australia's second innings and was dismissed for 2.

Ponting says he'll continue to use a hyperbaric chamber in the hope he'll recover faster from his elbow injury.
