The home win lifts Sydney level on points with league leaders Melbourne, while the Mariners have now lost a club record four matches in a row to sit precariously on the edge of the top six.
Melbourne and Sydney are on 35 points, five clear of Gold Coast whose All White striker Shane Smeltz is the league's leading scorer with 15 goals.
Smeltz's former team, the Wellington Phoenix, are eighth in the 10-team competition on 22 points, one ahead of Adelaide and North Queensland.
