The homeside will resume on 305 for 3, with Michael Hussey at the crease on 38.
On day one, openers Simon Katich and Shane Watson were both dismissed in the nineties and captain Ricky Ponting also scored a half century.
Ponting had been in doubt for the match after suffering an elbow injury in the third test against the West Indies last week.
