Nelsen retired from football last year to coach Toronto FC in Major League Soccer, but was sacked three months ago.

The new All Whites coach Anthony Hudson says he's been speaking with the 36-year-old and he may look at getting him involved with the team in a formal capacity.

"I want to use his experience as much as possible, he's a legend, what he's done for New Zealand football is incredible," says Hudson.

"I was in touch with him over the trip to China and Thailand and I hope we can maybe develop that relationship and see where it goes."

With Hudson trying to develop an extremely young side, he's keen to get as much experience as possible and says the involvement of Nelsen could provide a massive boost for the players.

"He has to be around what we're doing, he has to be recognised and I know New Zealand Football are looking at that."

"His input is incredible, if not for me, which is is for me, but for the players as well, Winston (Reid), Chris Wood, the younger guys, he's a great role model."

Hudson says they're working to organise more games with Asian opposition for the March international window, with it looking likely that New Zealand's qualification path to the World Cup in Russia will be through the Asian Confederation.
