Johnson didn't train with team-mates at the venue on Saturday and Cricket Australia have confirmed he wouldn't recover in time for the final Test against India beginning on Tuesday.

The team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris says Johnson had some hamstring soreness during the Boxing Day test and he has not fully recovered.

The coach Darren Lehmann says Johnson is an important part of the team's plans for the remainder of our summer and they want him 100 per cent right so decided not to take any risks with him.

Mitchell Starc is set to resume his 14-Test career in place of Johnson.

Australia lead the series 2-0.
