The Blues will be without their new signing Daniel Bowden for the start of the Super Rugby season after he suffered an injury in last weekend's pre-season trial against the Chiefs.
Bowden damaged a ligament in his foot when he came on late in the match and will be out for at least the regular season opener against the Chiefs next Saturday.
The coach Sir John Kirwan says he injury's not as bad as first feared, but it came at an unfortunate time for the five eighth.
He says he brought Bowden on to see how he would go at second five-eighth but he suffered the injury in that short time.
Sir John says Ihaia West will start the season as the number one option at first five eighth.
